As Canadians, we often pride ourselves with being nice. Holding open doors, saying thank you to cashiers, and smiling at those walking by isn't just a polite gesture, it's a habit. However, Donald Trump may not feel the same way. During the annual spring dinner for the National Republican Congressional Committee, Trump states that Canadians are "not at all nice" and he has actually made us "nice,".
We're all aware that Donald Trump is known for saying some pretty crazy things, but usually, they aren't directed towards his friendly neighbours in the North. However, while Trump was giving his speech for the National Republican Congressional Committee, he used the opportunity to take a dig at Canada while discussing the North American free-trade agreement.
According to CTV News, he stated that while he was attempting to negotiate new terms for the trade agreement, the Canadian negotiators were not nice about it. He even stated, "They're not at all nice about that situation, but we've made them nice. We've made them nice and they're not happy about what happened,".
Of course, as Canada prides itself in being strong and free, these digs don't exactly embody the representation of Canada that fellow Canadians like to uphold.
Throughout this speech, Trump also bragged about how he ended up pressuring Canada to accept his terms for the free-trade agreement. He declared that this new agreement will now allow U.S. farmers to sell their goods in Canada, something which Canada was not allowing America to do in the past.
Of course, the speech also held some of those Canadian stereotypes that Americans love to use. Donald Trump leads off his statement about Canada by saying, "We think of the beautiful song, the ice hockey games. O Canada, isn't it beautiful? But in the meantime, they knock the hell out of us on trade,". But hey, at least he gave Canada a few nice words.
According to CTV, this isn't the first time that Donald Trump has actually made a dig at Canada either. In September, Trump also stated that Canada treated the U.S. "very badly," and that we are "very spoiled,".
Many Canadians don't seem too pleased about these comments, calling it a bold claim, saying Trump knows nothing about Canada, and some are even calling them false via Twitter.
Now he’s taking credit for nice Canadians? I don’t think so @realDonaldTrump. We are always nice cuz we aren’t you or your rude Americans.— Deb (@DashofHound) April 4, 2019
Clearly, he knows nothing about Canada, trade agreements, and honorable behavior. Canada doesn't have to be "nice" to Trump. And to suggest he bullied them into being so is a lie. Yes, I live in the US and no, I do not support Trump.— DresdenRose ☘️🌹📚 (@DresdenRose) April 4, 2019
“MADE THEM NICE”?!?! That’s very eloquently put, Trumpy the Clown. We are called CANADIANS and we are all Proud and Strong! Canada and the World LAUGHS at you, you stinking pile of SHITE!!! ❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇵🇭❤️❤️❤️— Ramon MM🇨🇦🇵🇭 (@RamonMM9) April 4, 2019
Makes me sick when he even mentions my country. 🇨🇦— Misstwist (@misstwist443) April 4, 2019
Canada has always been nice— susan abbott (@susanab28396729) April 4, 2019
Wow, that is a bold claim. No one has ever claimed before that Canadians are nice. Thank goodness he came along and showed us how to roll that way eh?— C Frederick (@PoweredbyPoodle) April 4, 2019
No matter what Canadians think about Trump's comments, it seems they all agree that Donald Trump is being "un-nice" to Canadians.
