Vegetarian and vegan burgers have been on the rise at food chains across Canada lately and they have been a huge success. First, both A&W's beyond meat burger and breakfast sandwich were a complete hit. Now, it looks like Canadians may soon have another veggie burger to choose from when they're grabbing food on the go. Burger King's new plant-based "Impossible Whopper" burger will likely come to Canada this year!
Burger King representatives confirmed to Narcity today on April 5, 2019, that the new plant-based burger "will likely come to Canada" sometime this year. They said that they have yet to reveal an approximate date yet as the "Impossible Whopper "burger is currently undergoing a pilot program in the U.S.
So what is the new Impossible Whopper? It's similar to the Whopper burger that many Canadians have come to love, but the patty is made out of completely plant-based ingredients.
It's marketed to taste exactly like the meat version of the already popular Whopper burger. The company first announced it earlier this week on April 1 and is now testing the Impossible Whopper by making it available at several restaurants in St. Louis, Missouri in the U.S.
"People on my team who know the Whopper inside and out, they try it and they struggle to differentiate which one is which," Fernando Machado, who is the chief marketing officer at Burger King, told The New York Times.
He also revealed that if the plant-based burger is successful during its pilot testing in St. Louis, the fast-food chain plans to make it available at all of their locations in the country.
The new Impossible Whopper burger patty is made by Impossible Foods, which is a company that specializes in making plant-based substitutes for animal products. Impossible Foods says that their Impossible Burger is made from mostly water and plant proteins with heme on their website.
Impossible Foods first launched their Impossible burger in 2016, and they've been improving it with new recipes ever since. "We launched the Impossible Burger in 2016, but we didn’t stop there. Since then, we’ve been learning how to make it even better," says the company on their website.
"As of 2019, we’re proud to announce that there’s a new recipe in town. The new Impossible Burger is tastier, juicier and more nutritious -- featuring 30% less sodium and 40% less saturated fat than our current recipe and just as much protein as 80/20 ground beef from cows. 100% more delicious and more versatile than ever."
